Tully: Senate "Health Care Bill" Will Harm Hoosiers

Indianapolis Star political columnist Matt Tully writes that the Senate health care bill is a "national disgrace, and "Indiana’s leading Republicans — namely Gov. Eric Holcomb and Sen. Todd Young — should put their state ahead of their party and say out loud what they must already know: The Senate’s so-called health care bill is a mess that would harm Indiana and shatter the lives of many of its citizens." Buttigieg to Visit Iowa in the Fall

South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg will travel to Iowa to headline the Progress Iowa Corn Feed event on September 10, says Brian Howey. Perhaps he is fulfilling a lifelong dream to visit Iowa as the corn crop is maturing. Others suspect different motives. "You don't go to Iowa unless you're thinking about running for president,” says Chris Sautter, a Washington-based Democratic media consultant. Buttigieg will be joined by others who may have aspirations for a 2020 presidential bid, including Senators Jeff Merkley and Amy Klobuchar, as well as 2016 presidential candidates Martin O'Malley and Bernie Sanders. Mike Pence Hires Himself a Lawyer

Like most folks associated with the Trump White House, Vice President and former Indiana Governor Mike Pence is getting lawyered up. Seeing the Mueller investigation focusing in on Trump's inner circle, and even Trump himself, Pence hired former Virginia attorney general Richard Cullen to keep him out of trouble. What does Pence have to worry about? Plenty, it would seem. Among other things, as head of the Trump transition, he was the guy who supposed to vet Mike Flynn, who was acting as an agent of a foreign government at the time Pence was blessing him to serve as National Security Advisor. As Rachel Maddow put it:
Mike Pence was the head of the [Trump] transition, while all of those news stories of Mike Flynn being on the Turkish government’s payroll were breaking. He was the head of the transition when Mike Flynn was being vetted for the National Security Advisor job. He was the head of the transition when Congress formally notified the head of the transition that Mike Flynn appears to be on a foreign government’s payroll. He was the head of the transition when Mike Flynn’s personal lawyers came and told the transition that Mike Flynn maybe needed to register as a foreign agent. . . . It’s something to pick someone manifestly unfit for the job of National Security Advisor to be National Security Advisor, that’s one thing. It is another thing when you bring somebody on board to a top national security position while they’re also on the payroll of a foreign government! And you either don’t notice or you don’t care.
You can read a detailed analysis of what Pence has to worry about from Daily Kos here.

Donnelly Learns of Shooting While at Democrats' Practice for Congressional Baseball Game

Like the Republicans, Democrats held an early morning practice for the annual congressional baseball game. At that practice Senator Joe Donnelly learned of the shooting at the Republicans' practice. He had just left the field and come in for batting practice when he heard Rep. Mike Doyle say, "Oh my God" and then explain the shooting.

“Mike immediately went out to the field and called everybody in and brought everybody into the dugout, told everybody what had happened,” Donnelly said. “We kind of put our arms around each other and said a prayer for our friend [Majority Whip Steve Scalise] and for the officers and for the aid and for everyone else who was injured."

Donnelly felt it was important to to play the game as scheduled: “We don’t want to be seen as folks who stand down and worry about these kinds of things. Our job is to try to help do what’s right for the country to make the country stronger, and the last thing the country needs to see is us kind of walking away when we have a chance to do something that benefits others.”
